Can Native Americans Grow Facia Hair? Tips for Beard Growth.

can native americans grow facial hair

While most ethnicity can grow a beard without even lifting a finger, there are some who can not seem to grow facial hair at all. Others grow facial hair but it is usually patchy. I decided to find out, whether Native Americans can indeed grow the mane.

So, can Native Americans grow facial hair? Native Americans can actually grow facial. However, not many Native Americans can grow a full bear and most Native American men’s beards appear patchy. Traditionally, they are known to pluck their facial hair. Read on to find out why.

Disclaimer: This post does not in any way intend to disrespect the beliefs and culture of the Native Americans. It is merely an explanation of why not many Native American men have challenges growing a beard. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with not growing a beard.

The history of Native Americans and facial hair

The growth of facial hair is stimulated and promoted by testosterone and DHT and genes. Having the right beard growth genes, and low levels of testosterone may hinder you from growing a beard. At the same time, having enough testosterone and beard growth genes known as androgen receptors that are not sensitive enough to testosterone and DHT may hinder your beard growth goals.

When you look harder at most Native American men, most likely, they will not have facial hair or signs of having some. Traditionally, Native American men have not entertained the thought of growing facial hair. They have been shown by history to pluck their facial hair once it grew.

While it can be a challenge for a 100% Native American man to grow a beard, inter ethnicity marriages have made it possible for some Native American men to grow a beard.

What does the research say about Native American’s facial hair growth?

In my many hours of research, I did not find single research that focused on why Native Americans have facial hair growth challenges. So, I focused on establishing any connection that Native Americans might have had with any of the other ethnicities that do not grow a beard easily such as the Asians.

My research took to me to eastern Asian men who also have the same challenge of growing facial hair as Native American men. Based on this article published hereOpens in a new tab., based on genetic analysis, Native Americans and East Asians have very similar genetical makeup. When the characteristics of androgen receptors in both ethnicities were analyzed, it showed that both ethnicities are very closely related.

After having established that Native Americans may have their genetic ancestry in East Asia, I now did more research as to what may cause the East Asian men to struggle to grow a beard.

First, I concentrated on the levels of their Beard growing hormones (testosterone and DHT) as low levels of these two hormones can greatly impact the growth of facial hair. Based on this research published hereOpens in a new tab., that compared testosterone levels among Asian and caucasian men, the results showed that there is no significant difference in testosterone levels among the two groups of men.

In fact, some Asian men may even have higher levels of testosterone as compared to Caucasian men. So, what makes the difference if both men from East Asia have the same levels of testosterone as Caucasian men?

Well, here is the difference. East Asian men tend to have low levels of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase as shown by this study hereOpens in a new tab.. This enzyme is tasked with converting testosterone to its more potent form DHT that binds to facial hair follicles via androgen receptors and stimulates beard growth.

So, if you have enough testosterone and lack enough 5-alpha-reductase hormone, your body will not have enough DHT to promote beard growth. This concurs with this study published hereOpens in a new tab. that states that poor beard growth in men concurs with the deficiency of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone.

I went ahead and did more research into East Asian men androgen receptors (beard genes) sensitivity to beard-growing genes. Based on this studyOpens in a new tab., Asian men tend to have more copies of the human androgen receptors in their bodies (and face for that matter). More copies of the androgen receptor translate into reduced sensitivity to DHT a beard growth hormone.

To summarize further, Asian men have normal levels of testosterone (one of the beard growth hormones).

But they lack enough 5-alpha-reductase enzyme (responsible for turning testosterone into DHT) DHT is another beard-growing hormone.

Additionally, their androgen receptors (zones where DHT binds into to stimulate beard growth) are not sensitive enough to DHT.

Combining the two reasons above explains why most Asians may have a problem growing a beard. This consequently explains why Native Americans having genetic ancestry from East Asia may have a problem growing facial hair.

Well, there you have it two reasons that could be the reason most Native Americans may have a problem growing full facial hair.

But you may ask, can Native Americans grow a full beard despite the two challenges discussed above?

3 ways Native American men can grow more beard

Well, to increase the amount of facial hair on Native Americans, one would need to boost the 5-alpha-reductase hormone and increase the sensitivity of the androgen receptors.

Minoxidil (Rogaine or Kirkland 5%)

There is not only anecdotal evidence of men who have used Rogaine to grow their beard effectively. Even scientific evidence supports the use of Minoxidil to grow new hair.

Minoxidil was an ulcer treatment medication, but later the researchers found out that it actually improved blood circulation. This new development led to the drug being used for people who were suffering from high blood pressure.

Fast forward, one of the side effects of the drug was to cause excessive growth of facial and body hair. As the popularity of the drug increased, researchOpens in a new tab. was conducted in Thailand to find out whether it can be used to help men from Thailand grow facial hair, as they are some of the ethnicities that have issues growing beards.

The results were surprisingly very positive, as men involved in the study were able to grow facial hair. Therefore, Native Americans who wish to grow a beard can use Rogaine to achieve what genetically they may not be able to.

Use a beard roller

While minoxidil takes the first place as the best beard stimulating serum, a beard derma roller takes second place s one of the best hair growth stimulating tools.

A derma roller is a small tool that contains thousands of small needles that puncture your skin as you roll it over the area you want to grow a beard. These punctures make your body increase blood flow to the rolled area in an attempt to heal the rolled area.

Increased blood flow means more beard hormones, more nutrients, and collagen which eventually stimulates beard growth.

Combined with minoxidil, a derma roller can be a great tool for any Native American man looking to improve their beard growth potential. Most people have had success using a 0.75mm roller with titanium needles.

To use rogaine and derma roller for Native American beard growth follow these steps

  • Get a good dermal roller and Rogaine/minoxidil
  • You should apply rogaine/minoxidil on your beard growth area daily for the next 9 months
  • Make sure to roll your beard growth area twice a week
  • Always apply minoxidil 24 hours after derma rolling.
  • Use a beard and skin moisturizer after rolling and applying rogaine

Mucuna pruriens

Mucuna pruriens, or commonly known as velvet beans, have been used in Indian herbal medicine for ages.

Some of the benefits of mucuna pruriens are to increase testosterone, improve fertility, and boost sexual potency in men.

StudiesOpens in a new tab. show that mucuna pruriens can act as an androgen receptor activator as shown hereOpens in a new tab..

Well, as mentioned above, East Asian/Native American androgen receptors are not highly sensitive to beard growth hormones.

Therefore, consuming mucuna pruriens will go a long way to activating their androgen receptors and improving their beard growth.

Sorghum has also been proven to increase the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT.

Conclusion

If you have been wondering why you can’t seem to a fully bearded Native American, we hope our article has fully answered your concern.
