Does Biotin Help with Beard Growth?

does biotin help with beard growth

While most men can grow a beard effortlessly. Some men struggle growing facial hair. Since biotin aids in the production of keratin the primary protein in hair, I was wondering whether biotin can help grow facial hair.

So, does biotin help with beard growth? Yes, biotin does help with beard growth. However, Biotin will only help you grow a beard if your facial hair growth journey has been impeded by low biotin levels in the body. Taking biotin supplements while your body’s biotin levels are ok will not help you grow facial hair

Biotin and beard growth

There is no research that has been carried out specifically focused on biotin and beard growth. Nonetheless, research published here and here shows that biotin supplements have improved the hair thickness of people who were suffering from conditions that affected their hair such as alopecia.

As mentioned earlier, taking biotin supplements while your body biotin levels are at par will not help you grow a beard or even hair. The only time taking biotin supplements will help you grow beard or hair is when you have been suffering from a biotin deficiency as shown in this study and this one.

What is Biotin (Vitamin B7)

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin and is a part of the vitamin B family. Biotin is also referred to as Vitamin H. It helps your body converts some nutrients into energy and plays a crucial role in the wellbeing of your nails, skin, and hair, and facial hair.

A shortage of biotin in the body can lead to hair loss or weak nails. Nonetheless, cases of biotin deficiency are rare as most of the foods that we consume help keep biotin levels within the required amounts.

Most people are using biotin supplements to reap the full benefits of this vitamin.

Importance of consuming biotin supplements

  • Enhances metabolism of carbohydrate
  • Improves the health and growth of nails, hair including facial hair and skin

  • Maintains production of fatty acids

Which foods are rich in biotin

Heat can reduce the efficacy of biotin, when preparing these foods do not overcook them.

How can biotin potentially help with beard growth?

Biotin Can be consumed both orally and applied topically on the skin. Apart from supplements bought in stores that come in the form of tablets, biotin can also be found in face creams beard oils and serums.

Given that research shows that people who have biotin deficiency had improved hair growth after taking biotin supplements. We can conclude that if you have low levels of biotin in your body, this could be causing you not to grow facial hair as expected.

However, the most important point to note here is that, you must be in a position to grow a beard. If you can grow a beard and through medical assessment you have been found not to have enough biotin in the body, then supplementing biotin can help you grow back your beard.

If you cannot grow a beard naturally using biotin will not in any way help you grow a beard. Check this article here about how to grow a beard if you can’t grow one.

Studies show that there is a co-relation between biotin deficiency and hair growth. When biotin levels are low the growth of hair is largely affected as shown in this study here and here.
